Response of Burton Constable
Burton Constable do not open in the Winter season so I would be unable to use the location for my music video, which is a shame as it would of been ideal but due to coursework timing I would not be able to use it in time of the completion of my video.

E-mail of permission to Burton Constable
I will be filming on Burton Constable grounds as they are public, but I will need permission to film inside. I have sent Head of Enquires and Adminstration, Helen Dewson, an e-mail to ask her.
Update on Location
I did give this some thought, but I have finally decided to film more of my video at a change of location, Burton Constable Hall. I will film in the grounds as part of my 'home video' location, although some may still be done at Pickering Park. It is allowed to film in the grounds as they are public, however I was hoping to be able to film in the Burton Constable house itself but need to e-mail for permission as it may not be allowed.
Burton Constable is a brick manor house from the 15th Century situated in Holderness/Skirlaugh, just outside east Hull, East Yorkshire. It includes a great Elizabethan Hall, Dining Room, Saloon Staircase, Long Gallery, Gold Bedroom, Great Drawing Room, Blue Drawing Room, Chippendale Room, and Chinese Room. These were all re-decorated in the 17th Century.

Test Shots
I have filmed shots for the 'telephone' scene in my video. Since then I have changed the camera, and also the lighting plans have changed for that scene.

Props
These are the props I'm going to use in my music video:-
Bedroom Scene
In the 'telephone/floor' scene the props used are the old-fashioned red telephone, the photograph of her 'ex' boyfriend and also the wedding ring.
In the other bed scene where Emily is laid on the bed, the props are a bed throw, lots of old fashioned jewellery and pearls (which she will be draped in) and american dollars (not real ones, just printed out paper)
Wall Scene
There is no props in the wall scene to be used.
Backstreet/'Tenfoot' Scene
The props used in this footage will be a cigarette, and also I have recently added a shot where Emily kicks a glass bottle in anger, so I will also include a glass wine bottle in this.
Woodland Scene
In the 'home video-camera' footage, when Emily dances in the white dress I am thinking about giving her some netting to glide around with. I think it will make the video look more effective.
In the picnic scene in the 'home-video' footage the props will be a checkered picnic blanket, a picnic basket and plates/cutlery and some food.

Casting
I am only casting one person as the artist in my music video. It is my friend Emily, she is 17 years old and also from Hull. She fits the role of my '1960's/70's' girl perfectly,as I can combine her appearance to look more vintage style, with the different hairstyles, clothes and make-up inspired.

Fashion in my Music Video
These are the decided outfits I would prefer Emily to wear in the music video-
Woodland
I would like Emily to wear one of either of our prom dresses, which are either white or ivory. She is going to wear it with a headband made of dried flowers which is orginally from Leeds Festival 2012. I would also like her to wear some anklets. I would describe look as almost like a 'fairy' :-)
I will prefer her to have bare feet or some delicate sandals.
In the other 'woodland' scene which is a picnic, she will wear pastel coloured or jazzy shorts/dress, I am also thinking about giving her a retro headscarf and 'Cat-Eye' sunglasses. She will also wear a blouse or a bralet which I am not deciding till before we film.
Bedroom
In the telephone/floor scenes in the bedroom, Emily will wear a cream/ivory blouse with a fussy flower collar. She will wear 1960's/70's style pearl white earrings with gold rimmings. To make the look not too overly fussy, she wears black leather leggings with the blouse, and has bare feet.
In the 'bed' scene, Emily is going to wear black and cream/beige netted lingerie which has a silky texture. However, I am going to make it look more 'subtle' by draping her in lots of old-fashioned jewellery and also slightly wrap some of the silk bed throw (which she is also laid on) around her. She will also wear a lot of jewellery such as necklaces, rings and a pair of earrings to emphasis her 'wealth' in the video. She is also wearing nude platform heels.
'Wall' Scene
Emily is going to wear a dark blue velvet/velour dress with a detailed white collar. She will also wear black tights. There is no need for shoes because it is inside the house and you will not see them as the shots are close-ups/medium close ups.
'Backstreet'/'Tenfoot' Scene
I am using a 'biker' 'rocker chic' look for these scenes. Em will wear a leather biker jacket, and then a black fringed bralet. Then she is either going to wear black lycra disco-pants or high-waisted blue denim shorts with the US flag printed on them (mainly the pockets) with fishnet tights with holes cut into them. These will be worn with lots of silvery symbolic jewellery and high-heeled black boots.

Make Up and Hair Ideas for my Music Video
Woodland Scene
Make-Up
For my location in the 'woodland'/park area, my artist is going to be wearing one of two undecided prom dresses. However, they are both similar shades, one is white, and one is a cream/ivory shade. I have overall decided for this that I will give her quite an 'innocent', 'mild' and natural make up look, as many of her looks in this video are a bit more 'over the top'. I have decided she will wear a lightly coloured foundation, with no lip colour or a very pale pink shade. Also a rosy blush and a white/gold shimmer (which goes with the dress) to highlight her cheekbones. Also on her eyelids she is going to wear a light white silver shadow, but not to heavy, with little mascara. I will also colour in her eyebrow hair more to define her brows. Her nails will be plain or painted an ivory/cream shade.
Hair
For Emily's hair in this scene it is going to be naturally straight, but I am putting it in a loose messy bun. I am decorating it with a flower chain headband, either one with beige roses or one which is made of dried leaves and dried cream flowers.

Bedroom Scenes
There is two scenes in the bedroom. One is Emily laid on the bed, and the other is Emily curled up on the floor beside the bed. However, the look for both is very similar, even though the outfits are different.
Make-Up
In the 'floor' scenes Emily is wearing foundation, and a light rosy blusher . However, the look is more heavier, she wears red lipstick and has black smoky eyes and eyeliner flicks with thick black mascara. I also used an eyebrow pencil to define her eyebrows shape/colour more. The make up is the same in the 'bed' scenes.
Hair
As my video is styled to be 1960's/70's, I have also put Emily in hair rollers as it is a stereotypical of a 1960's/70's 'vintage housewife' woman for the floor scenes. In the ones where she is laid on the bed it will be in curls (styled like Marilyn Monroe) instead of the rollers.
Wall Scene
Make-Up
This will be the same as the bedroom scene make up, except she will wear just thick eyeliner flicks instead of more heavy smoky eye look. I also will put a 'beauty spot' on her face, like in the style of Marilyn Monroe.
Hair
Emily's hair will be the same style also as the 'bed' scene.
'Tenfoot'/Backstreet' Scene
Make-Up
Emily will wear foundation, with a more burgundy/red heavy lipstick. I would like have to have smoky eyes with thick liquid eyeliner flicks and thick, black mascara, to make her eyes give a good but still pretty 'dark effect'. She will also wear some slight blusher to highlight her cheekbones, but I will contour them more so they look more 'harsh' and significant. I was also colour in her eyebrows to define them more like the other shots. I would describe the look I want to get across as a kind of 'rocker' look.
Hair
I would like Emily's hair to be naturally straight but I am going to make it a little more 'limp' and ruffled as it helps show that she looks more 'careless' which is the characteristic I am trying to get across in the shots I am going to film. I am not going to add any heat tools or hair products.

Locations for my Music Video
For the 'Super 8' Camera old-fashioned footage I am filming in Pickering Park, West Hull. It is a public park with a childrens park and swimming pool but I am using the flower gardens/woodland/bird aviary area for the setting.
I am also filming in my bedroom, for the bed scenes in my music video. I am going to try and get props to make it look a bit more 1960's esque, like the following image for example.
For some of my other scenes further into the video, I am filming my artist (Emily) against a white wall but editing the colour to a 'polaroid' 'red/green/blue tv signal' effect edit. An example of this is like in one of Marina and The Diamonds videos (shown below).
For my fourth location I had the idea to use an almost 'run down', gloomy area. For this I am using a 'tenfoot'/backstreet behind some houses nearby where I live in West Hull, like this picture for example.

Codes & Conventions
The selected
brief I have chosen to do is to create the Promotion Package for the release of
an album, to include a music promo video; together with two of the following
three options: A website homepage for the band, a cover for its release as part
of a digipak (CD/DVD Package) or a magazine advertisement for the digipak
(CD/DVD package).
My chosen
song is ‘Million Dollar Man’ by Lana Del Rey, an American solo-singer. The genre her songs are based on are Indie
Pop, Alternative, Chamber Pop and Sadcore. The song itself is on her latest album but
doesn’t actually have an official music video released, which gives myself more
of a chance to have more freedom on how I portray the image of the music video.
The genre is obviously a mix of sub-genres but is mainly dominated by indie pop
(which is a genre of alternative rock). The conventions seem to be identified
as jangling guitars, 60’s pop and a melodic ‘power pop’ song structure. Lana
Del Rey also bases her image as very vintage and 60’s inspired, which combines
with the musical genre she performs. Similar artists to the genre are Marina
and The Diamonds, Florence and The Machine, Nancy Sinatra and New Young Pony
Club. I have compared conventions in music videos from these artists (We Want
To- New Young Pony Club, Primadonna – Marina and The Diamonds, Nancy Sinatra-
Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) and Florence and The Machine – Cosmic Love).
Most videos
of Indie Pop are usually typically of a Performance or Narrative nature. From
the examples that I looked at these all were Performance/Narrative based. The artists are portrayed using mixed
emotions to perform the music, not stereotypically ‘enjoying’ the music like in
many videos, but this is based on the narrative of the videos. The audience Indie Pop is likely to attract
is both male and female, but more elder teenagers (15,16+) to people in their
late 20’s, as Indie Pop was inspired in the 1980’s era.
Also the
Cinematography in these videos uses a majority of close-ups on the
artist/band. None of these show however
the evidence of playing any particular instrument, like on many performance
music videos. Lana Del Rey closely
associates her videos with culture such as war, presidents such as John F
Kennedy, the 60’s and 70’s lifestyle and different interpretations of ‘The American Dream’ . It is different from
many videos nowadays such as R&B where the imagery is hugely populated by
audio-visual sexual nature. This is also
inspired by film maker/director John Waters, and retro photographers Philip Lorca DiCorda and Juergen
Teller. Del Rey also makes prologues or epilogues in some of her music videos,
such as ‘Ride’ or ‘National Anthem’.
The main focus point in these videos always resumes to be the main
artist, even if its Narrative. Within the videos there is always establishing
shot and ELS to show the scene in the music videos. There is also medium close
ups in many of the videos, establishing the artist singing, for example in
Primadonna they are showing Marina singing and showing different emotions. It is clear in all the videos what is going
on and where the artist is established, its just sometimes figuring out the
actual narrative of the video. The
videos create mystery and possibly suspense as the examples I have chose have
unique narrative and keeps the audience wondering what will happen next. You
have to watch the whole of Lana’s videos as they are usually like a small
story. Marina and The Diamonds portray all their music videos as numbered
parts, so this helps them get more attention and views on their videos as the
story/performance is ‘unfinished’. In
Nancy Sinatra’s Bang Bang the camera only ever zooms in on her or shows her at
LS , MS, or MCU shots, which is the same for the other artists, asides when
there is more extras (i.e in Cosmic Love by Florence+TheMachine where there is
dancers with her). They all use simple camera techniques, not anything that is
more effective as the audience is focused on the narrative of the music video.
The main
used editing techniques are jump cuts and cutaways. In Lana Del Rey’s videos
they use jump cuts for original footage from courtesy of other companies (such
as 60’s era culture etc.) and also
Florence and Marina’s videos to different scenes of the artist (e.g marina in
the garden to when she is in a vintage bedroom.) The editing isn’t always
rhythmical, it may be perhaps because the songs are of a slower tempo.
Crosscutting is used in the videos to show the artist also singing beside the
narrative. Eyeline matches are also used
combined with the crosscutting to emphasis the story.
The
mise-en-scene is important in these videos, as they play such a huge part in
the narrative performance. In literally all these example videos they are based
on 60’s 70’s retro vintage era. In Marina and The Diamonds the house she is
based in all has furniture/décor which would have been popular in that era
e.g)velour bed throws, flock patterned wallpaper, frayed lampshades etc. In
Primadonna and New Young Pony Club’s We Want To there is evidence of old
fashioned televisions (this is also
portrayed in Primadonna as the camera colouring is dated and like Vintage Polaroid
camera shots). Lana Del Rey, New Young Pony Club, and Marina Diamandis all
generally style theirselves in 60’s/70’s/80’s clothing/Vintage fashion,
including hair and make up. Nancy Sinatra was originally from that era so that
would have been ‘modern’ for her at the time.
In the videos asides Marina’s, the others use more sepia tones to
recreate the look of an old fashioned film camera, similar to Marina’s
television screen technique. The scenes Lana uses are created for the
surroundings to be like that area, i.e the street- the shops look like general
shops from the 60’s, instead of modern, like featuring a supermarket/petrol
station, the cars are morris minors, old Cadillac’s etc.
The sound in
the videos is asynchronous diegetic. You don’t see the instruments being played
by the artist/band. The artists also use voice over other scenes where they are
not ‘lip syncing’ which also makes it asynchronous. Also within the narrative
videos there is voices from the extras which you can hear in example when the
president dies in Lana Del Rey’s ‘National Anthem’ the onlookers, screams when
the president is shot in the car.
This is
synchronous diegetic. However it does switch between synchronous and
asynchronous as sometimes the narrative or for example Del Rey’s
prologues/epilogues are used before the song starts and the artist is shown
singing.
The form in
conclusion is Narrative, with some Performance (although this is shown less,
and more in Florence and The Machine). In my examples these are not your
typical ‘studio’ background and more like a storyline. The only text shown in
any of the videos is the opening title of the song/artist. The narrative of
Lana Del Rey’s ‘National Anthem’ is her romance with her husband who is a black
president (considering the segregation era) in the 60’s/70’s, how she is living
the ‘American Dream’ and when he dies at the end (which is portrayed by the
death of American president John F Kennedy.) As previously mentioned she also
shows footage of the 1950’s and so on.

Media Evaluation Essay: Skill Development
EVALUATION ESSAY: Skill Development
At the start of my Foundation Portfolio I had to do two
Preliminary exercises. One was to create a fragrance advert and the other,
which was more relevant was to create a magazine on college life. To produce this work we had to use desktop
publishing (such as Microsoft Word and Publisher) and also image manipulation
software, Photoshop CS5 version. The
preliminary task for the fragrance advert helped us learn basic skills within
Photoshop and developed further as we did the college magazine for the other preliminary
task. For the college magazine I had to create a front cover along
the guidelines of it being a medium close-up photo of student(s), appropriately
laid out text and also a masthead and main headline. This helped progress into more in-depth skills
of photo shop ready to start my music magazine, and how music magazines are
conventionally set out for my Foundation Portfolio. For my Foundation Portfolio
I created a front cover, contents page and double-page spread. All the imagery
for my magazine had to be original and needed at least 4 original photos
produced by me. I chose to create my
magazine along the lines of an indie-rock/pop genre and I felt my
photos/article would summarise this.
In my Foundation Portfolio I used image-manipulation programme
Photoshop CS5 to make my own photography look more professional for the
magazine. As I had no in-depth Media
knowledge before I started my Media course (unlike others who had taken it at
GCSE Course) Photoshop especially in my preliminary tasks I found this a little
bit of a struggle and sometimes confusing.
However as I got to grips with it Photoshop let me edit my photos to a
standard that even official music magazines could, the main grasp being finding
tools and knowing how to use them properly and effectively. I also had a little trouble with my first set
of photos, the photography didn’t portray the genre of the magazine properly
and some photos seemed to unclear after a set the text out over them, so I
decided to take another set of photos. The images I set for the final designs
were much better and in sync with the genre, and also easy to edit. An ideal photo to use for the magazine cover
was preferably a medium close-up of the artist (in focus) , and to show eye
contact. Another issue (which I had trouble with on previous drafts) was to
make sure there was enough room for the Masthead above the models head, and not
let text overlook the image too much.
This made me do several drafts and as previously said, another
photo-shoot . Other magazine conventions that needed to be included was- Main
Headline, Bar-Code, Date/Issue Number, Skyline, Subtitle and so on. Therefore it would look professional with
typical conventions, communicating with the audience that it was ‘something
worth buying’.
As part of the creativity process I firstly planned a colour
scheme of Coral-Red, Black and White. I also used the ‘Layering’ technique on
Photoshop so I could correctly create different effects on my Portfolio
magazine. I researched the typical conventions of a music magazine. For my Masthead I used a simple ‘Calibri’
font (previously Onyx in other earlier drafts) and advanced this with learnt
skills such as the Bevel/Emboss, Stroke in white, with an Outer-Glow, and also
a Drop Shadow on the text. Using colours
such as Black and White was basic, but it was simple yet effective. I also
heightened the angles of the text to make the Drop Shadow look more effective,
I had advanced a standard font into a professional magazine Masthead. I also used the airbrushing and spot-removal
tool on my model’s skin to make her look more defined, like stereo-typical
models on existing magazines which gave her a professional complexion. I also made the brightness and contrast of
the whole image slightly higher as I wanted a professional ‘photo-shoot’ look
to my image. I also gave my model
different coloured hair (out of my own Photoshop research) to a quirky red (this went with the
stereotypical indie/rock look I based my magazine on). I did this by using a
‘Soft Light’ layer to the image, lowering the Opacity levels (to make it look
less like ‘paint’ on her hair) and also advanced my skills in the paintbrush
tool box, using various brushes such as the 300 circular brush on thicker parts
of her hair, then the 11 brush which was more delicate for more accurate,
‘wispy’ bits of hair. After I had
finished this I duplicated the layer used clipping masks and Hue and Saturation
to change the colour and mess around with it till I got the correct colour I
liked. For the backing on my magazine Cover lines I used the rectangle tool,
and also used the shape tool for the Splash/Puffs on my cover. I filled these
with colour and changed the opacity to make some of the shades more
‘see-through’. All these skills helped
me advance hugely and find Photoshop a lot easier as I was discovering more
which advanced my photos. For the
actual photography I was able to dress and style the model in suitable clothing
e.g. indie fashion, ‘rebellious’ hair etc. as an identification in relevance to
the genre. Once I had finished my final
designs, I printed them off to show my class (i.e. audience) and created my own
questionnaire to see their opinions on my final front-cover, double-page spread
and contents page. I also filmed one member of my audience with a video camera
who did a review on her personal view of my products and more in-depth detail
than the questionnaire.
For the research I firstly looked at existing music
magazines such as NME, Kerrang!, Rolling Stone and Billboard. I looked
especially at the conventions they had used and also to what extent they had
used them. A lot of them looked bold and simple, a common convention between
all of them. As for NME for example they
have a bold red front, shadowed with black and bordered with white always in
the top left corner of the magazines. On some editions they have the whole font
in white with no shadowing, e.g special editions etc. I also looked at artists
who were relevant to indie-rock/ pop and looked especially into existing music
magazines ‘NME’ and ‘Frank’ as they are popular with the genre. I mainly used the internet and music magazine
issues as sources of research, and used the internet and my own personal taste
in music for my choice in creating the magazine for my Foundation Portfolio.

Qualitative Data- Gathers information that is not in numerical form, such as statistics. Qualitative provides a more indepth description and provides more of a meaning. Used in such methods such as Case Studies and interviews.
Quantitative Data- Quantitative Data focuses more on numbers and frequency, rather than meaning and 'experience'. They provide information which is easy to analyse statistically and fairly reliable. They are associated with Scientific and Experimental approach, however are critisied for a vague description.

'Primadonna' by Marina & The Diamonds
Mise-en-Scene The video for 'Primadonna'by Marina and The Diamonds only features Marina as a 60's/70's chic (which is also part of her recent initial style). The only other 'characters' featured in the video is a Great Dane dog and a tortoise. The video's settings is what seems to be an old mansion/Country house&garden, which is 60's/70's decor (busily patterned wallpaper, curtains, chandeliers, frayed lampshades,old-dial telephones, velour bed-throws etc.)There is also the setting of Marina in a vintage car being driven round and also in a car-wash. Marina is in 60's/70's clothing, such as pastel pink and white pinafore dresses, metallic ballgown and cream fur shawl,a blue v neck 70's dress and a vintage nightie, she also styles pinned up 'rollers', and 60's 'flick' hairstyles with pastel make up in contribution to the style. She also sports a love heart 'beauty-spot'which is very Marilyn Monroe-esque (movie star of around that era). The lighting for most the video, although in a house is dark, aside the spotlight which is featured on Marina. The only other lighting shown is when she is outside in the garden in the daytime, and when the chandeliers gradually light up one of the rooms halfway through the video. Props used in the video is when she is holding a vase of plants, pedaling on a dated exercise bike with a drink, reading a book, climbing a ladder to get to pick fruit off a tree, using a video camera, picking up slices of pizza, bunches of grapes and playing on an old grande piano. Marina uses 'personal'body language for the majority of the video, staring into the camera singing and also sometimes just facial expressions,as if to connect with the viewer. Marina's expressions also seem happy throughout the video, aside when she is in the car she looks sad. Marina also dances round the camera and does various activities in some shots as if she doesn't know the audience 'is there'. Cinematography Many of the scenes in the video Marina is shot in a close-up,and also medium close-ups. In the majority of close-ups Marina is in front of a white wall, and medium close-ups is when she is on the bed, but some of these are also close-ups. Medium shots are when she is pedaling on the exercise bike, dancing in a room full of chandeliers, eating an apple on the step-ladder and also in other bed scenes. There is also some long shots of her dancing in the chandelier room,in the garden/on the step ladder and holding a plant in one of the rooms and on the exercise bike. There is also close-ups of the dog, tortoise and her lips as she sings. There is a medium shot of her sat in the back seat of a vintage car and also close-ups (some extreme close-ups) of the water droplets on the car window and screen wipers as she goes through the car-wash, and also of some of the car furnishings. There is also a close-up of Marina in the car over the headrest. There is medium close ups of her next to the dog, tortoise and 'answering'the phone. There is also some slightly high angles of Marina on the double-bed. Editing The video uses many jump cuts for Marina in scenes. There is also some cross cutting in scenes such as when she is picking fruit off the trees in the garden and then focusing on eating the fruit, and also playing around in the garden. Special effects used are particularly focused on the whole 'vintage-esque' setting, as Marina is filmed in different 'old tv' settings, such as grainy, scan lines,'Polaroid' film, blue red and green tones and also mild Sepia colours. A close-up of a vintage tv showing the same type of effects on the screen shows relevance. When in all the car/car wash scenes this is all filmed in black and white. A lot of the video is continuity editing, the only transitions made are when the actual screen of the video is made to look like a tv losing ariel and picture, and changing to a different scene. The opening scene is also a title sequence, first showing 'Marina and The Diamonds' and then the song title 'Primadonna'on a purple and black backdrop,in black font (the signature font on the album). There is also a light relflection of the blue/red/green tv tones shown in the music video. Sound and Form In the scenes Marina is 'singing' the song she is lipsyncing. The song is also a voiceover for many of the scenes as Marina is not always lipsyncing but is doing other actions for the video. The song is diegetic sound. In the beginning title sequence there is also the asynchronous non-diegetic sound of an old camera 'rolling'. The form is performance, there is not really a clear narrative to the video.
